Chapter Nine
Lyndsey blinked. Maybe she’d already started that breakdown because she could’ve sworn she heard him say his house. She would’ve laughed at the absurdity of it…except he was standing beside his open passenger door that he held for her.
“My place is close by,” he said. “Just down the street.”
Oh…crap.
She hadn’t heard him wrong.
Without permission, her body heated and made to sway toward him. Not good. She straightened her spine while her mind raced her heart to form a conclusion on whether or not it was smart to take him up on his offer.
On one hand, it would definitely be nice to not have to worry about crowds. She could break down without people coming over to see what was wrong—or worry about men coming on to her, offering a shoulder to cry on…in their bed.
At Gabe’s, she could drink safely and irresponsibly, and give in to her grief.
Definitely all good points.
On the other hand, she had to worry about keeping her hands to herself. And she could definitely do that. She could also make a fool out of herself. That didn’t bother her, though. Most drunk people got a pass for that…and she intended to get drunk. Or at the very least, feeling really, really good.
Still, there was one thing she needed to know. “I have an important question first.”
“Go ahead.” He nodded. “Ask.”
She studied his face. “Do you know how to make margaritas?”
He smiled. “Learned from an award-winning bartender down in Mexico.”
Si, por favor!
“Okay. Thanks. Let’s go.” She climbed in, refusing to give the decision any more thought.
She didn’t want to be alone. He was the safest person to be with when she lost rational thought…and she definitely planned to lose rational thought.
Plus, a Mexican bartender taught the man how to make margaritas. That was the clincher.
An hour, and two and a half margaritas later, she lounged on a large couch in front of a cozy fire blazing in a stone fireplace not quite as large as hers. It was as warm and inviting, though. So was Gabe’s house.
Located just two blocks from the clinic, it was decorated in earth tones and with just the right amount of furniture as to not be too sparse or overly crowded. Since she would’ve thought he’d like modern, clean lines, and everything in its place, she was shocked to walk into the warm, cozy, welcoming house that reminded her of her own. Chunky furniture. Wooden beams and casings, and an open concept kitchen-living room.
“You have a nice place,” she said, smiling at the dog laying on another blanket near the hearth. “Looks like someone else thinks so, too.”
“Thanks. And yes, he seems to have claimed that spot,” he said, settling down next to her with another round of drinks
Her fourth. His third.
But they were weak.
And she didn’t complain, because they were damned delicious. He’d rimmed the glass with cayenne pepper and mixed some kind of mango juice or puree with the tequila. The combination was her new favorite.
She sipped her drink, studying the dog then Gabe.
